Dre Bell – The Electric Slide

Birmingham, Alabama

As a kid growing up in the South, it’s easy to blend in with all the other kids. It was when I 7 years old moving to a new school, not knowing but 1 or 2 other kids I wanted to fit in and be liked by everyone. My first week, I was wanting to feel like a “big kid/cool kid” and had the barber give me a “buzz cut” . good and thought I looked like a real football player. As I confidently, walked into the classroom one of the students turned and shouted “Dre your hair!” While pointing and laughing. It was that moment that I experienced what it felt like to be an “outcast”. I was humiliated and wanted to turn back time and NEVER get that buzz cut!!
I knew I was more than what that kid made me feel that day, and this would be my chance to show that it shouldn’t matter what others think of me but most importantly HOW I FELT ABOUT MYSELF! I had seen the “mullet hair style” on a classic movie. I decided I was going to have a “Mullet” and would become the very first kid at our elementary school of 600 students to introduce them all to the “Electric Slide” and rock the mullet with pride! I started a trend and within months, other moms were messaging my mom asking for a picture of “Dre’s hairstyle” for their sons (who were in 5th grade ) wanted their hairstyle just like “Dre’s”!!! I mean WOW, a 8yr old had the hairstyle they all wanted!
I have cared for the “Electric Slide Mullet” for the past year all with intent to compete in the 2023 Mullet Championship Contest! I am passionate about helping others and when I heard of contest and how they help the “Wounded Warriors”, I knew I had to compete! If I am a part of helping show my gratitude to those who have served our country and protecting our freedom it would be my greatest honor!!
